What Did Jesus Teach?
The Christian life consists of a relationship with Jesus where we follow what he teaches and where he leads. What he teaches is the rock on which we need to build our lives.
‘Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.’ Luke 6:46-49
We are all building the house of our life. The bricks are varied, such as our family, sports, school, holidays, work, hobbies and religion. Jesus taught clearly that it is possible to be religious but still not have a genuine relationship with God. Jesus repeatedly warned us all that only authentic followers of himself will be given eternal life.
Two Destinies – We will all face God’s judgment when we die, though we may experience forewarnings of his judgment now. We will then either live with God eternally or we will face eternal separation from him. Not everyone goes ‘to a better place’.
Two Foundations - One is SIN, which is spelt with ‘I’ in the centre. Essentially a ‘sinful’ life is one centred on ourselves. Even religion can be self-centred. Jesus is clear that the only saving foundation is himself. Calling myself a Christian does not make me one.
The glorious Christian message is that everyone can be changed and enter God’s kingdom if he or she accepts the rule of the king, God’s one and only Son. If you are interested in knowing more please come and hear the Bible taught. The rock is what Jesus taught. This is revealed to us in Scripture. To reject what Jesus taught is to reject God.
