Evangelism is a Priority (Bible Verses)

If asked ‘Why are you a Christian’ most Christians will respond by giving ‘the reasons’ they became followers of Jesus. However the word ‘why’ also has another meaning - what is ‘the purpose’ for which we have been chosen by God to be his people. Many seem to be much less clear about this. Could this be the reason so many churches are weak? Christians have been called to glorify our Heavenly Father and his Son, the Lord Jesus. We glorify him by the way we live and by what we say. We have been chosen to present to the nations the claims and demands of Jesus. What a tragedy it is that so many claiming to be Christians do not see this as their priority.

I have listed the following verses under the heading ‘Evangelism is a Priority’ on the blank sheets in the back of a Bible that I have noted when reading through the Bible. They emphasise the absolute priority of our sharing the faith with others.

1 Kings 18:36 At the time of the sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel . . . But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will be saved yourself.

Matthew 9:35-38 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harried and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Acts 5:40 . . . they had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 1 Corinthians 9:12 We put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

I Corinthians 9:19-22 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 10:33-11:1 For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to Christ who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

2 Corinthians 3:9 . . . how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness.

2 Corinthians 3:12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.

2 Corinthians 4:1-2 Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, not do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

2 Corinthians 4:13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” with the same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak.

2 Corinthians 5:11-21 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the lord, we try to persuade men . . . For Christ’s love compels us . . . And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you, on christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Galatians 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus . . .

Ephesians 3:9-10 Although I am the least of all God’s people, this grace was given to me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery . . . His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 6:19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains.

Philippians 1:14 Because of my chains most of the brothers have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.

Philippians 1:27-28 . . . contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you.

Philippians 2:14-17 Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life . . .

Colossians 4:2-6 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us too that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly as I should. Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

1 Thessalonians 2:15-16 They displease God and are hostile to all men in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved.

1 Thessalonians 3:2 We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God’s fellow-worker in spreading the gospel of Christ,

1 Timothy 2:5-7 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men . . . And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle - I am telling the truth, I am not lying - and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

1 Timothy 6:1 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.

2 Timothy 4:15 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.

1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. but do this with gentleness and respect.

Revelation 2:10 Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life

Revelation 6:9 I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.

Revelation 12:11 They overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

Revelation 12:17 - those who obey God’s commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

Revelation 19:10 (An angel says) I am a fellow-servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Revelation 20:4 And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God.

There is surely no doubt why God has selected us to be his Chosen People - it is to give glory to the Lord Jesus that others may believe in and follow him, may publicly testify about him, as evidence that they will receive eternal life.
